The Iroquois Confederacy - Historia Civilis
This cultural documentary offers an expanded view of an overlooked yet vital part of US history and culture: the Iroquois, also known as the Haudenosaunee. This tribe and many others that have come to shape the modern USA are scantily covered in modern-day academia. Anecdotally, but in my personal experience, I only remember the Iroquois confederacy being briefly discussed in elementary school. I was discussing this topic with my out-of-state friend, and he showed me that on top of the aforementioned fact, our education system localizes each curriculum. he had never heard of the Iroquois & I had never heard of the three-fire confederation.

This video provides a strong understanding of the civics and formation of the confederation. By offering an anthropological view of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, it delivers a complete yet concise look into the fabric of their society. With this comprehensive perspective, comparisons can be drawn to our union—particularly in how our government structure was inspired, in part, by the Haudenosaunee, as acknowledged by one of our founding fathers, Benjamin Franklin.
The documentary highlights how the fight to establish the confederation, along with the structure to maintain peace, was incredibly complex for its time. With this deeper insight, one can better understand the ideas and intentions behind the creation of the United States Union.
The final important idea, the confederacy showed us that paved the way towards the modern USA, was that a union of states was even possible. I believe that to gain any understanding of the United States, you have to start where our state started, as a bundle of desperate territories seeking escape from a superior power, which deeply mirrors the establishment of the confederacy as a means of maintaining peace after a drawn-out war. There are also, however, some interesting differences, as the Haudenosaunee are primarily a matriarchy, with supreme power lying with the clan mother.
